The Paragraph Book 1
$15.60 The Paragraph Books, a new, highly specialized writing intervention series targets middle school students with learning differences who have not been successful in conventional language arts programs. The series’ step-by-step approach builds writing competency from the ground up—students learn to edit, format, and build paragraphs while mastering 4 basic writing strands required in regular English and content area classes and standards-based state tests. By the end of the book, students are writing complete essays. Lively writing, illustrations, and a systematic approach make this series easy to teach and to
use. The Paragraph Book series is especially useful for students with weak
fine motor skills who have trouble with handwriting. Through ample practice with editing marks, students learn the material without becoming worn out or frustrated with the process of writing and rewriting. This method has been tested and shown to work with LD students of varying levels, as well as other students. This series is also beneficial for students with organizational problems; the structured format gives them a framework on which to build. Students who have difficulty spotting errors will also find this program helpful. Special attention is given to looking for missing capitals, dropped endings, missing and double words, etc. This is a great aid to those with weak symbol systems.
The Paragraph Book 1 Workbook guides students through the process of mastering
"The How-to Paragraph." Students also learn and practice using basic editing marks.

Writing Skills Level A
$11.00 Appropriate for Grades 2--Adult
The Writing Skills 2nd Edition series teaches the writing process in a series of logical steps. Originally designed for the student struggling with the writing process, it offers a basis for clear thinking and writing. As students learn to write and improve sentences, they work on grammar. Meanwhile, they learn to generate ideas by writing lists, to compose topics and supporting sentences, and to use transitional words. They progress from paragraph writing to essay writing. A chapter on spelling provides practical information for teaching it throughout the writing course. Sample compositions and an annotated bibliography conclude the book.
The first book in this series, Book A, presents sentence structure and parts of speech, writing purposes and audience types, prewriting organization and paragraph structure.

How to Teach Spelling Manual
$38.95 Levels Grades 1-12
Appropriate for Learning and Language Disabilities.
This is my favorite spelling program. First of all, it is a complete 1st to 12th grade program. Secondly, it is designed to systematically teach the rules and generalizations of spelling, not just memorizing lists of words. Testing is done through dictated sentences which check rules previously taught as well as those in the current lesson. This is a real meaty program, and the teacher’s manual can look overwhelming at first glance. Following the sequence in the workbooks, and going to the teacher’s manual for dictation materials only makes this program easier to use initially. The instructions at the beginning of the book are intended for a classroom and should be modified to fit your home situation and specific needs of your child.
Teaching spelling, no matter what you use, to kids with language learning disabilities can be very discouraging! Realistically, many children with language difficulties will never be “good” spellers. If you go through a good program and emphasize memorizing (as best they can) the rules of spelling, they will be able to get close enough so that items such as spell-checkers or Franklin spellers will be useful tools. I recommend that you make charts, posters or lists (maybe with art work by your child) of the spelling rules as they are studied . Then encourage your child to refer to their own rule list as they encounter difficult words. In this way, the information is constantly in front of them to review and use which is more functional than just having a lot of memorized rules without knowing how to use them.

Apple Tree Language Teacher's Manual
$48.50 Levels 1st--3rd grade reading levels.
Appropriate for students reading at approximately 1st--3rd grade levels who are struggling with basic writing skills.
A ordered, sequential approach to developing good sentence structure as the basis for written language skills. I like the many pictures and charts used throughout this program which help clarify structures that children with language problems find confusing. This teacher's manual is a real must for this program because there are many abbreviations used for the parts of speech which may be confusing without the teacher's guide. Workbooks are listed below.
